In April , Science Tokyo was designated as a University for International Research Excellence, and has since been advancing cross-disciplinary research centered on its Institute-wide framework, the Visionary Initiatives (VI). The eight VIs transcend the vertical boundaries that have traditionally separated medicine and dentistry from the fields of science and engineering or informatics to help address societal challenges. The School of Dentistry, home to world-leading dental research, is organically integrated into all these initiatives. The core themes of the “Materials-Positive Society” VI, for example, include the development of materials that evolve with each use and AI-driven materials design, areas in which dental materials science and dental device development are making direct contributions. In “Total Health Design,” the maintenance of oral health is positioned as a cornerstone of holistic wellbeing, fostering collaborative research in prevention, treatment, and diagnostics that bridges medicine, dentistry, science, and engineering. “Well-Vitality” addresses age-related oral functional decline and the preservation of masticatory function, while “GX Frontier” promotes the development of environmentally sustainable dental materials and manufacturing processes — both advancing as interdisciplinary research endeavors. Furthermore, “Innovative-Life Society” is expected to drive the digital transformation of dental practice and education through digital dentistry and cyber-physical integration technologies.Collaboration with the Laboratory for Future Interdisciplinary Research of Science and Technology has also been gaining momentum. Concrete initiatives are already underway, including reciprocal faculty and student exchange, hospital and laboratory tours, and expanded joint research involving scientists and engineers from across the Institute. These cross-disciplinary interactions are expected to serve as fertile ground for the discovery of entirely new seeds of research.Through these efforts, the School of Dentistry will continue to play a pivotal role in convergence science at Science Tokyo, leading the way in research that addresses societal challenges from the vantage point of oral science. Dentistry’s Contribution to Interdisciplinary Research through Visionary Initiatives and Related Efforts口腔から全身へ、そして社会へFrom oral health to systemic wellbeing — and to society at largeMaterials-Positive Society Program Director猪越 正直
