The mouth is a critical part of the body, serving as the channel for nutrition while also being a potential entry point for infections. During hospitalization, oral function and hygiene can deteriorate due to systemic disease and the hospital environment. If left unaddressed, this can lead to reduced food intake, nutritional deficiency, and even infections originating from the mouth. By leveraging the unique strengths of the Science Tokyo Hospital, which integrates both medical and dental professionals, the Oral Health Center collaborates with various hospital departments to support the maintenance and improvement of oral health for hospitalized patients. The Oral Health Center is part of the Division of Integrated Facilities and is staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including specialists in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Periodontics, Geriatric Dentistry, and Special Needs Dentistry, as well as dedicated dental hygienists. The team is committed to promptly addressing oral health issues of hospitalized patients. To prevent postoperative complications associated with general anesthesia, we focus on improving oral hygiene before surgery. After surgery, we continue to monitor for any oral problems and provide appropriate care as needed. Additionally, to prevent oral complications associated with systemic disease treatments, we emphasize early detection and intervention for oral health issues from the pre-treatment stage onwards. If patients experience a decline in their ability to eat or develop oral health issues during hospitalization, we will respond swiftly and appropriately. We place great importance on interdisciplinary collaboration, working closely with various hospital departments and the Department of Nursing to promote oral care.
